gaudenz badrutt was born in chur and brought up in davos. he began playing the piano at the age of eight. he was, during his time at college, pianist and composer for various theatre productions by the ‘dramatische kantonsschülergruppe’. during this time he had interest in various musical styles and experimented with electronic tapes, synthesizers and improvisation.
1994 until 2001 - studies at the hochschule für musik&theater bern/biel - master courses headed by claude helffer, paris (later with piano instruction), gertrud schneider / tomas bächli and fred frith
1998 - teacher’s diploma (gertrud schneider)
2001 - concert diploma with distinction (pierre sublet) - works on various musical theatre productions such as mauricio kagel’s ‘der mündliche verrat – ein musikepos über den teufel’ (direction: jonas kocher) at, amongst others, the ‘schweizerischen tonkünstlerfest’ in zug, or ‘les adieux’ by jonas kocher in biel
2001 - stipend from the pro arte foundation
2002 - stipend from the canton of grisons, competition for professional cultural workers
until 2003 - various piano recitals, primarily with 20th century piano music
2001 until 2005 - teaches at the ‘pädagogischen maturitätsschule kreuzlingen’ - works as an improvising electronic musician (synth., sampling etc.) mainly in the duo ‘strøm’ (with christian müller, bass clarinet and electronics, since 2000) - diverse concerts in various locations, partly with guest musicians - numerous theatre productions under the direction of barbara-david brüesch
2002 - 'coup de coeur' award of distinction from the music commission of the canton of bern
2004 - first prize at the ‘concours de reding’ (competition for improvisation of the swiss association of musicians)
other projects as an electronic musician include: ‘biennelectronic orchestra’ with a six hour audio-performance in the park in collaboration with hans koch, martin schütz, christian müller, silber ingold, chrischi weber, edgar laubscher and jonas csloviecek in the ‘elfenaupark’, biel; sound installation ‘projektorroadambiance’ for the ten-year anniversary of the ‘alpodrom’ in marsoel, chur; ‘abula rasa’ a production by ‘alpodrom’ in marsoel, chur in collaboration with m.lardon and p.c.zumthor for the musical concept and its implementation; ‘thuro’ a musical/literary realisation of the novel ‘thuro’; composition and performance of a lake sound-scene; collaborations with ulrich gasser (composition and flutes), jürg lanfranconi (diverse wind instruments and percussion) and martin huber (speaker).
